The colourful artworks by Nathan have been painted in Wembley in honour of the England Lionesses squad following their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 victory. Nathan did a wonderful job capturing the key expressions of the England Lionesses as they successfully won the Euro tournament!

I was commissioned by Artist In Residence in partnership with Brent Council to design and paint this series of colourful welcome murals, celebrating the England Lionesses team that won the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 football tournament.

Prior to carrying out my research and design phase on the project, Artists in Residence conducted a number of community engagement sessions with children at the local primary schools to generate ideas for the content of the murals.

The key themes to emerge from these sessions were; football, welcoming people to the community and referencing local history. This was also around the time when the England Lionesses had won the Euros, so it was agreed that celebrating the Lionesses team would be the focal point of the artworks.

The full series of murals occupies 3 different railway bridges owned by Network Rail in the Wembley area of London, UK. The artwork runs across 5 separate walls and measures a combined length of around 150 meters of painted artwork!

Park Lane

The Park Lane mural contains subtle visual references to foliage and nature from the nearby King Edward VII park. More specifically the ‘O’ contains a depiction of King Edward VII’s famous crown.

The Park Lane mural spans across both sides of the bridge and measures 48 meters in total. The mural includes England Lionesses; Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Alex Greenwood, Jill Scott, Keira Walsh, Fran Kirby, Nikita Parris and Lauren Hemp.

White Horse

The White Horse mural’s ‘O’ contains a visual reference to Billie the white horse from the famous 1923 ‘White Horse Final’ in which a police man riding a white horse controlled the crowds. This is a famous moment in local football history and is how the bridge was named.

The White Horse mural spans across both sides of the bridge with the artwork repeated on each side and measures 78 meters in total. The mural includes England Lionesses; Ella Toone, Ellen White, Lucy Bronze, Mary Earps, Chloe Kelly and the England Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman.

Wembley Park

The Wembley Park mural contains subtle visual references to the architectural structure of Wembley Stadium as well as the ‘O’ being a football.

The Wembley Park mural occupies one section of the bridge and measures 24 meters in total. The mural includes England Lionesses; Allesia Russo, Millie Bright, Georgia Stanway and Rachel Daly.

To explore the three linked murals you can visit Park Lane, White Horse Bridge and Wembley Park.
